MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS

If you are multiplying mixed number fractions; first change mixed number fractions into improper fractions.

This is only tested in Grade 8!

Activity: to be completed in your mathematics book – memorandum will follow in next lesson.

Please complete in your book and upload here.

a. \(\frac{3}{4}\) x \(\frac{8}{9}\)

b. 2\(\frac{1}{4}\) x 6\(\frac{2}{3}\)

c. 2\(\frac{3}{4}\) x 1\(\frac{1}{2}\)

d. 1\(\frac{1}{7}\) x 1\(\frac{1}{4}\)

e. 8\(\frac{2}{5}\) x 7\(\frac{1}{2}\)

MEMO: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS:

1. 1 ½ + ¼

= 1 + (1/2 X 2/2) + ¼

= 1 + 2/4 + ¼

= 1 ¾

2. 5 ¼ + 1 1/3

= 6 + (1/4 X 3/3) + (1/3 X 4/4)

= 6 + 3/12 + 4/12

= 6  7/12

3. 5 ½ – 2 1/3

= 3 + (1/2 X 3/3) – (1/3 X 2/2)

= 3 + 3/6 – 2/6

= 3 1/6

4. 3 1/8 – 1 ¼

= 2 + 1/8 – (1/4 X 2/2)

= 2 + 1/8 – 2/8

=1 + 9/8 – 2/8

= 1 7/8
