MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS

If you are multiplying mixed number fractions; first change mixed number fractions into improper fractions.

This is only tested in Grade 8!

Activity: to be completed in your mathematics book – memorandum will follow in next lesson.

Please complete in your book and upload here.

a. [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] x [latex]\frac{8}{9}[/latex]

b. 2[latex]\frac{1}{4}[/latex] x 6[latex]\frac{2}{3}[/latex]

c. 2[latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] x 1[latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex]

d. 1[latex]\frac{1}{7}[/latex] x 1[latex]\frac{1}{4}[/latex]

e. 8[latex]\frac{2}{5}[/latex] x 7[latex]\frac{1}{2}[/latex]

MEMO: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS:

1. 1 ½ + ¼

= 1 + (1/2 X 2/2) + ¼

= 1 + 2/4 + ¼

= 1 ¾

2. 5 ¼ + 1 1/3

= 6 + (1/4 X 3/3) + (1/3 X 4/4)

= 6 + 3/12 + 4/12

= 6  7/12

3. 5 ½ – 2 1/3

= 3 + (1/2 X 3/3) – (1/3 X 2/2)

= 3 + 3/6 – 2/6

= 3 1/6

4. 3 1/8 – 1 ¼

= 2 + 1/8 – (1/4 X 2/2)

= 2 + 1/8 – 2/8

=1 + 9/8 – 2/8

= 1 7/8
